Hibiscus is much more than just a restaurant, and that is why the owners, Eric and Sandra Voelin, call it the Hibiscus Project. Located on the main road between the Mayan ruins of Quirigua and Puerto Barrios, the restaurant is set within a lush forest and is the ideal place to stop for a quiet, enjoyable lunch. They have indoor and outdoor seating, an interpretive trail, and a museum of traditional native clothing and handicrafts. The food is eclectic and delicious, and features both typical Guatemalan dishes and international food.

The Hibiscus Project is a unique Ecological Restaurant, and the owners work hard to preserve local culture, history, and ecology. In addition to offering its guests exquisite food, the restaurant also has a Cultural Museum with over 40 native outfits and costumes, explanations of the symbolism of their designs, and samples of traditional handicrafts.
They restaurant also has an interpretive, eco trail, where guests can experience the Tropical Rainforest. The trail is a part of 13 acres that are protected by their owners Eric and Sandra Voelin.
