Castle of San Felipe

Set on the shores of Lago Izabal, the largest lake in Guatemala, the Castle of San Felipe is an living monument to the ancient pirates who used to terrorize the region.  The castle was built in the 1500’s to protect the Spanish strongholds from marauding pirates, and a tour can be arranged to visit the castle by boat or by car. 

Many companies offer trips to the castle that include a boat tour and lunch.  These companies include:  Happy Fish; Exotic Travel; Eco Ways; Izabal Travel; and Gray Line.  Expect to pay $45-60 for a five-hour tour.  Don't forget your camera!
