Beluba Luba Furendei is a children’s community library.  It is a non-profit operation and has no political or religious associations.  Its goal is to develop educational and recreational activities and programs for the children and youth of Lívingston.  The main objectives of the library are:
  • Contribute and support the educational models of the city schools through the implementation of a children’s library that is free to enter and use in order to improve the access to information pertinent to the scholarly development of the children of Livingston.
  • Improve the development of the learning experience of children, offering them an adequate space to develop playful, creative activities that permit them to reaffirm the knowledge they have acquired.
  • Contribute to the improved quality of life of different community sectors through the stimulation of community participation.

Volunteer Program: Volunteers are welcome to join the library and work to develop workshops, classes, and activities for the children.  Volunteers can create new programs or work within existing programs.  Past volunteers have worked on giving English classes, tutoring children on creative writing, and puppet and theater workshops.  The library sees an average of 100 children per day, and is open Monday- Friday from 8:30-12 and 2-5 and also on Saturdays from 8-12.

Requirements: The most important requirement for all volunteers is the willingness to work with children, an open mind, and creativity.  There are no specific educational requirements in order to volunteer in the library, although a basic knowledge of Spanish is important.  Volunteers are encouraged to stay for long periods of time in order to develop a relationship with the children and create educational programs, but short-term volunteers are also welcomed to participate in the project.

Cost: The Library does not charge their volunteers anything; they provide free lodging and materials (for volunteers who stay a minimum of 1 month).  The only cost to the volunteers is their food but they have a fully equipped kitchen volunteers can use.
