A quetzal perched on a branchThese vibrantly colored birds are known formally as the Resplendent Quetzal, befitting their bright blue, red, and green feathers. During mating season, male quetzals grow distinctive tail feathers that can be up to three feet long.  In Guatemala, quetzals are considered a threatened species.

The ancient Maya considered quetzals to be sacred animals, and their tail feathers were often worn by kings and priests or incorporated into religious rituals.
