Howler Monkey

Howler monkeys are among the largest species of primates in the Western Hemisphere.  They spend nearly all their lives in the protection of high tree branches and are frequently  seen—and heard—lounging around Lake Izabal.

The howler monkeys’ distinctive calls travel up to five kilometers to alert other animals of their presence, or to scare away predators. Their low, growling barks allow male monkeys to locate each other and communicate without moving, or risking aggressive confrontation with other males. This energy-saving measure has been developed in response to the animals´ low-energy diet of leaves, occasionally supplemented with fruits and flowers.
