Freshwater Dolphin

0.0/5 rating (0 votes)

All four species of freshwater dolphins in the world are endangered.  Of the four, two are found in Central and South America.  The dolphins that venture up the Río Dulce are more commonly found several hundred miles south, along the Atlantic seaboard of South America.  No one is exactly sure how many freshwater dolphins still live in the Americas as their numbers around the world dip due to the destruction of their habitats and river pollution.  Tourists report seeing these small playful mammals in the Río Dulce occasionally, however they are not spotted often.  The best way to see these animals in their natural environment is in traditional cayucos rather than boats powered by loud outboard motors.
