This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the center of a great city whose most powerful leader, King Cauac Sky (K'ak' Tiliw Chan Yopaat) commissioned the enormous steles you’ll find scattered across the park.

Castle of San Felipe

Castle of San Felipe

Set on the shores of Lago Izabal, the largest lake in Guatemala, the Castle of San Felipe is an living monument to the ancient pirates who used to terrorize the region.  The castle was built in the 1500’s to protect the Spanish strongholds from marauding pirates, and a tour can be arranged to visit the castle by boat or by car.
